Visiting the Eye Doctor During the Pandemic

When you need to visit the doctor, you should never put it off. Whether you are sick, need a refill on a necessary prescription or need to see your doctor for an annual visit, it is never a good thing to put your health to the side, especially during this pandemic. However, it is natural to be nervous to go into the doctor’s office during this challenging time. Other than speaking to the doctor’s office directly, there are a few things to remember when you are getting ready to visiting the eye doctor.

One of the biggest questions that you may ask yourself right now, regardless of your own vision issues, is whether it is safe to visit the eye doctor. However, the answer is simple: it is as safe as any other doctor’s office. While this may not make you feel much better, it means that your eye doctor should be taking the same precautions for masks, social distancing, and cleanliness as any other doctors’ offices that you may have visited recently. When you call to make an appointment, ask local optometrists in Calgary about the new procedures that they have in place to protect you and other patients from COVID-19.

The eye is a vulnerable part of the body, and is in close proximity to the brain and sinuses. So, according to the American Optometric Association, COVID-19 may be contracted through eyes and spread to the rest of the body through the blood vessels in the conjunctiva. All doctors, staff, and patients should be wearing masks, and there should be a proper prescreening process to keep people safe from those who may have symptoms. And, while social distancing is not always possible for eye exams, many eye clinics are limiting the number of patients allowed in the office.

Many eye doctors’ offices are open for elective appointments and emergencies. While some are not open for regular checkups, patients are encouraged not to put off emergency visits and put their health at risk. If you find that you cannot see out of one of your eyes or the symptoms of your severe myopia have suddenly become much worse, you need to call into your eye doctor and get help.

If you ever feel as someone is too close, speak up. When you are concerned about coronavirus and the eye doctor, speak to the clinic and the doctors directly so that you can get the medical services you need while everyone remains safe.
